Men, Women, and Humanity
From the beginning of time, humanity (anthropos) has had two sexes (Genesis 1:27). There are males (arsen) who mature into men (aner) and females (thelus) who mature into women (gune).
First Timothy 2:4-9 contains:
anthropos. It is used to identify the category of creatures God desires to save (v. 4) and who have access to Jesus’ mediatorship (v.5). It is also employed to describe the continued human existence of the One who gave Himself as a ransom for humanity’s sins (vv. 5-6).
aner. Adult males are expected to “pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting” (v. 8).
gune. Adult females are to “adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation” (v. 9).
Not only do the Scriptures affirm there are only two sexes, they clearly state differing divine expectations for each.
